The 6th INAFOR 2021 – Stream 2 : Managing Forest and Natural Resources, Meeting Sustainable and Friendly Use: Sustainable Use of Forest for Livelihood, Biodiversity Conservation and Climate Resilience

Background

Forests provide vital roles for conserving biodiversity, protecting environment, reducing vulnerability to floods, droughts and other weather-induced disasters, and supporting the socio-economic needs of the communities. Forest resources have also been playing a significant role in driving Indonesia’s economic development since more than five decades. Despite the decline in its contribution to the national economy, the Government has consistently increased its commitment to sustainable management of forests and ensures that all elements of the nation can get benefits from these resources.

Science and technology are critical in the sustainable management and wise use of forest resources. Thus, in a rapidly changing world, the forestry sector need to be much more innovative to provide optimal contribution to the national development. Improvements in science and technology are crucial to fulfil the growing demand for the range of goods and services that forests can provide, including environmental and social benefits. Innovative technologies are needed to address multiple-use management, that ensure the balance of ecosystem function and socio-economic benefit.

Indonesia has more than 17,000 islands located between two continents, Asia and Australia, and between two oceans, the Pacific and the Indian Oceans. This outstanding geo-strategic location provides both potentials and challenges to improve the role of forests in protecting environmental life-support systems by regulating water supply, preventing flood, controlling erosion, preventing sea water intrusion, and maintaining soil fertility, as well as providing adequate food supply, energy supply for human life, germplasm for future use and resilience to the climate. Standing as a mega-biodiversity country, invention and innovation of science and technology in sustainable management and wise use of forest resources are extremely a must in balancing and optimizing the benefits of forests to the community livelihood, biodiversity conservation and climate resilience. This is to ensure that forests and the biodiversity therein are managed, protected and utilized sustainably and wisely to increase the economic and social welfare of all elements of the nation, and to enhance the resilience of human life in Indonesia.

The 6th INAFOR of the year 2021 is an essential meeting for researchers, scientists, academics, forest practitioners, and government staff all over the word to share and collaborate the current development of technologies and knowledge of innovative forest management and policy, enhance the global commitment for forest sustainability, and redesign the role of forests for people and planet. The Stream 2 of the 6th INAFOR 2021 will focus on the theme: Managing Forest and Natural Resources.

The Stream 2 will focus on how forests should be managed sustainably to meet its benefits for biodiversity conservation, livelihoods, and climate resilience. This include actions for reducing deforestation and forest degradation, landscape management and restoration (including peatlands and mangroves), post-mining reclamation, modern nursery, watershed management, preventing biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation, restoring habitat and enhancing population of endangered species, biodiversity of flagship species, forest fire control, economic and environment services, and prioritized ecotourism destinations. Enhancement of multistakeholder partnerships and cooperation to improve management and utilization of forest resources will also be covered.

The Stream 2 will also focus on how the forest products should be utilized to provide economic and environmental benefits for communities. Forest products, both timber and non-timber forest products need to be utilized properly in order to provide high added values, sustainable benefits as well as more environmentally sustainable forest resources. To support this, the role of innovation and technology in processing forest products is very strategic. The processing of forest products also provides benefits to the community as an alternative income and source of livelihood.

Objective

To deliver actions, policy evidences and solutions to transform how nature and forests are managed and used in a sustainable and wise manner in conserving biodiversity, restoring forests including peatlands and mangroves, responding to the climate resilience, supporting livelihood, health and poverty alleviation across stakeholders from local, national and international perspectives.
It would be held as an international forum to bring researchers, scientists, practitioners, policy makers and other relevant stakeholders to exchange information and experiences and to strengthen networking and collaborative work in Sustainable Management and Use of Forests for Livelihood, Biodiversity Conservation and Climate Resilience.
.
