Building upon the May 20, 2022, signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MOEF) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to jointly support Indonesia’s Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) Net Sink 2030 Operational Plan objectives, and following the November 13, 2022, White House Fact Sheet, Strengthening the U.S.-Indonesia Strategic Partnership, announced during the G20 bilateral meeting between President Jokowi and President Biden, the Government of Indonesia, through MOEF, and the United States Government, through USAID, hereby announce their intention to enter a framework agreement early next year for up to US $50 million, subject to the availability of funds, to launch a new climate partnership.
Indonesian Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya stated that she “appreciates this elevation of our ongoing bilateral partnership in support of Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 climate goals.” The Minister went on to say that “we can demonstrate that our partnership is not merely a pledge, but is being translated into climate actions.”
To support MOEF’s goals, USAID will coordinate closely with the Government of Indonesia at all levels and with local, national, and international stakeholders. Subject to legal and financial requirements, MOEF and USAID will detail their proposed activities in their new framework agreement.
“We support MOEF’s leadership on sustainable land use and the protection of valuable forests across Indonesia” said USAID Mission Director Jeff Cohen. “This framework agreement will deepen our partnership with the Government of Indonesia to address the challenges of climate change and to secure a prosperous, resilient, green future,” Cohen added.
The new climate partnership will include support to conserve orangutans and other charismatic species such as elephants, tigers, and rhinoceroses in Sumatra and Kalimantan. Bolstering ongoing conservation efforts, the partnership will provide support to MOEF’s priorities, including through the Indonesia Environment Fund, and will strengthen collaboration among relevant stakeholders to continue advancing sustainable, equitable management of Indonesia’s extraordinary natural resources.
